If you are Canadian citizen or permanent resident married to or in a common-law relationship with a foreign national, you can sponsor them for permanent residency in Canada. To apply you must and your spouse/partner must meet certain eligibility requirements and prove to the visa officer that you are in a genuine relationship with your spouse or partner and have not entered into this relationship for getting permanent resident.

7. Are in jail or convicted for a violent criminal offence

2. What are the requirements for common-law partners to be sponsored?

In addition to all the general requirements, you must have been loving together for at least 12 continuous months in a conjugal (romantic) relationship. You must be able to prove that you have built your life as a couple in these months.

3. Are there any income requirements to sponsor your spouse?

There are no minimum income targets you must meet in order to sponsor your spouse. However, you should ideally be employed or have the ability to show that once your spouse comes to Canada you will be able to provide them with basic food, shelter and amenities. You are required to also sign a financial undertaking which is valid for 3 years from the date your spouse/common-law partner becomes PR.
